For the country’s education sector to witness desired growth, Principal Consultant, Edumark, Mrs. Yinka Ogunde, has said those with passion and perfect understanding of the need of the sector should be at the helm of affairs.
Interacting with newsmen on the sidelines of the ninth Total School Support Exhibition (TOSSE), in Lagos, Ogunde challenged lovers of the sector to put things in proper perspective, saying it cannot advance in its present state.
She said there are so many talented individuals, with great intellectual ability, passion and vision that would drive the sector to a desirable height, yet everyone sits mute, watching the country’s education system fall apart.
“The contemporary education sector needs people who have constructive element that can make things happen. People that will drive things and they come to reality. Within the sector, I have come across so many talented people with amazing ideas, people whose concept will blow your mind, but nobody knows they are. Nigeria has quality human potentials with great and we are not getting returns.
“So, it is high time we position ourselves to have a say on who comes in as a commissioner or as a minister of education. It may look impossible, but I believe we can do it. We will tell them that we know those who can absolutely change the face of education. Already, we have an online platform, Concerned Parents and Educators (CPE) forum, and we hope to drive this change. We cannot get there, if we sit down and fold our arms, we must identify the people who can picture the kind of Nigeria we want to have in years to come and begin to develop the kind of curriculum that will actually get us this kind of Nigeria.”
In addition to canvassing that people with great vision should head education ministries, Ogunde said effort must also be made to reposition the teaching profession; sensitise parents, school leaders and the students on what is expected of them regularly, so as to achieve the desired goals.
On the TOSSE programme, she said: “We try to look at the current problems and challenges within the education system and we use the programme to proffer solutions to the problems identified.
